Foolproof Preparation Guide for your First Retreat
Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Before you book a retreat, it’s important that you have all of the information, and that you feel secure booking the retreat. Asking questions is one of the best ways to settle any nerves you may have, and to confirm those final details.
At O House, we love chatting with prospective retreat participants and are always happy to help clarify doubts. No question is too small - just send us an email and we’ll help you out. This is also a great way to get to know the retreat team ahead of time, which can help smooth out the transition into a new environment.
Connect with your cohort ahead of time
If you have the chance, we highly recommend getting in touch with your fellow participants before the retreat starts. For O House retreats, we always create an optional Whatsapp group for participants and organizers. Taking the time to chat with your cohort before the retreat can help you foster friendships before you’ve even arrived, unlock shared interests, and kick things off feeling like you already have a strong and supportive community. Plus, meeting so many amazing people can boost the pre-retreat excitement and make the whole trip feel even more thrilling.
Review the packing list in advance
Don’t start packing a day before your flight leaves; you want to make sure you have time to run to the store if you need any final items. Although our retreats rarely require specialized equipment, you may want to grab a new pair of sunglasses, ensure you have some sturdy walking shoes, or invest in a new camera for the trip. Packing ahead of time saves stress down the line.
Remember to pack medications
Piggybacking off of our last point: make sure you pack important medications or items. In the flurry of preparing for a big international trip, it can be all too easy to leave something critical behind.
Consider bringing a journal
Retreats can be transformative experiences. We recommend embracing the reflective nature of these retreats, and journals can be a great way to do so. You’ll have plenty of free time during the retreat where you can curl up by the pool and write about the day’s activities or how you’re feeling. Not only can this practice lead to a clearer mind during the retreat, but it also captures priceless memories that you can refer back to down the road.
Live in the moment
Once you finally arrive at the retreat, immerse yourself in every moment. This is your chance to unplug from your daily stressors and simply be. Laugh with newfound friends, explore beautiful villages, and dedicate yourself to the retreat’s focus, whether it be art, yoga, or surfing. It’s rare that we can take real time for ourselves. When you have the chance, make sure you enjoy it to the fullest.
Your first retreat shouldn’t be a source of stress. It should be your time to relax and reset. By thoughtfully preparing ahead of time, you’ll set yourself up for a true vacation where you can embrace slow living and peace.
If you’re interested in a retreat, but still feeling apprehensive, don’t hesitate to reach out! And if you’re already signed up, this is your sign to review those final details and get excited for this unforgettable experience.
