• Settle in, unpack, and relax. Today is your day to transition into the slow-paced living of Portugal, whether it be a quiet afternoon poolside, or a tranquil stroll through Ericeira center.

• In the evening, we’ll have an opening circle where we will connect and get ready for the days ahead. Then, you’ll enjoy a delicious welcome dinner prepared by our private chef.

• Start your day right with a relaxing wellness session. Designed to ease you into the day, these classes combine yoga, meditation, and breathwork to help you unwind.

• For your first workshop, you will reconnect with a meditative start to the retreat. Mark-making and abstract drills paired with creative exercises in calligraphy. Learn how to use a broad-edge pen.

We'll look at the structure of letterforms and the theory of balance in words, with calligraphy demos and the chance to put pen to paper.

• Relax, chat, and enjoy a tasty lunch prepared in-house by our private chef.

• In the afternoon, enjoy free time, or participate in an optional guided hike. If you choose to explore on your own, we will bring you downtown, where you may choose to wander the cobblestone streets, shop from charming boutiques, and sample tasty treats, or head to the beach for sun bathing and an ocean swim. If you choose to participate in our guided nature hike, we will trek along the coastline, drinking in panoramic views of the Atlantic.

‍ ‍• For dinner, take your pick of one of the fantastic restaurants in town. This is your chance to explore Portugal’s incredible gastronomy and enjoy downtown Ericeira. This meal is not included in the retreat.

• Continue with the new morning routine with another relaxing wellness session, followed by breakfast.

• For your second workshop, you will be exploring foundational script. Starting with meditation and mark-making, and moving on to learn both the lowercase and uppercase Foundational alphabet.

• Relax and enjoy an in-house lunch prepared by our private chef.

• In the afternoon, you will be exploring Textura Blackletter Script. Starting with meditation and mark-making, and moving on to learn both the uppercase and lowercase Textura alphabet.

• For dinner, enjoy another meal in-house. Afterward, relax with wine by the firepit or spend time with newfound friends.

• Wake up your body, mind, and soul with a restorative morning yoga session, then fuel up with a continental breakfast.

• In the morning workshop, explore Brush Calligraphy. Starting with pressure drills and movement, then look at lowercase and uppercase letterforms. Move on to full words, phrases, and layout.

• Eat a tasty lunch cooked in-house by our private chef.

• After lunch, your final workshop explores Creative Calligraphy. Pushing our newfound knowledge into layout and expression, breaking the rules, and getting creative with letterforms.

• Enjoy a celebratory dinner with wonderful Portuguese wines, reflecting on all you have learned. After dinner, drinks by the fire in the great company of your fellow retreat mates.

• Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, spending time with newfound friends and reflecting on the past few days. Take pride in your learning—you’re walking away with valuable new skills that will open up the world of calligraphy.

• We will transfer you to the airport for your departure, ensuring a stress-free transition back into your day-to-day life.

Do I need to have previous calligraphy experience?
This retreat is designed for beginners — we cover the basics of several calligraphy scripts, helping you gain the confidence and techniques to tackle more difficult calligraphy projects on your own.

What can I expect to learn from these calligraphy workshops?
The retreat will cover the fundamental skills needed to confidently continue your calligraphy practice. You will learn to use a broad-edged pen, the structure of letterforms, and the thory of balancing in words. You will also be introduced to Foundational and Textura scripts, brush calligraphy, and creative, break-the-rules projects.

Do I need to bring my own materials?
No, we will have all the supplies that you need.

Do you offer airport transfer?
Yes! Airport transfers are included in the ticket price.

What does a typical day look like?
Although each day looks different, there are some core themes and activities throughout each day of the retreat. Each day starts with an optional wellness session and a continental breakfast, followed by a calligraphy workshop. We will then have lunch cooked in-house by our private chef, followed by another activity block, which will either be another workshop or free time. During your free time, you may choose from a variety of additional experiences or simply explore on your own time. Finally, we wrap up with dinner and reflection at 7:30 PM.
