Top Five Best Hikes in Ericeira
Ericeira is famous for its surfing. Designated as one of fourteen World Surfing Reserves and often referred to as the surfing capital of Europe, Ericeira draws people from all around the globe to chase its picture perfect waves.
But there’s more to Ericeira’s nature than its breaks. Stunning hiking trails wind across the landscape, allowing for an intimate journey across some of Portugal’s most beautiful ecosystems. Here are some of our favorite hikes, from riverside romps to coastal bluffs.
Lizandro to São Julião
This hike, located south of Ericeira center, offers both riverside cliffs and coastal charm. As you hike along the hills, take in views of the Lizandro River. Keep an eye out for wildlife—this water-rich area is a paradise for birds.
The trail will bring you toward the coast, where the river meets the ocean. As you round the bend, you’ll get an inspiring view of the Atlantic, as well as Praia do Lizandro’s sandy beaches. After drinking in the view, continue south down the coast, where you’ll pass fascinating geologic formations. On dry sunny days, you may even spot some rock climbers scaling beachside boulders!
Finally, you’ll wind up in the São Julião parking lot. You can either end there, soaking up the feeling of a beautiful walk, or continue south toward Praia de São Julião, where you can find warm sand and beach bars where you can refuel.
Carvoeira
If you’re interested in checking out a different side to Ericeira, look no further than Carvoeira. Located further inland, Carvoeira provides a glimpse into river valleys and countryside. This hike begins at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Ó at the bank of the Lizandro River. Cross the small bridge and turn left down the first dirt path. The trail follows the river, passing through picturesque farmland.
The entire area is packed with trails, making it perfect for a short stroll, longer explorations, or trail running. Either stay along the riverbank, or cut up one of the many trails into the hills, where you’ll get expansive views of the landscape, as well as some forested sections.
São Sebastião to Ribeira d’Ilhas
This walk blends urban and nature, making it perfect for those who want a bit of both worlds. Start at São Sebastião and head north on the paved sidewalk. If you’re doing this hike on a weekend, you may be lucky enough to line up with the Mercado A.Ti.Tudo, an artisanal street market where you can find handmade art and local snacks.
Continue down the sidewalk, then turn left when you reach the parking lot just past César Seafood. Here is where the trail leaves the urban setting, bringing you right onto the bluffs for a seaside jaunt. At the end of a bluff is an old fort. Either stop there and head back the way you came, or climb the hill back to the main road and make your way to the iconic surf statue that overlooks the ocean. Snap some photos and enjoy the views of Ribeira d’Ilhas. You may even descend the stairs to the beach and grab lunch at Ribba.
Ribeira d’Ilhas to Coxos
Finally, our northernmost hike is Riberia to Coxos. This trail is the best option for watching advanced surfing and catching gorgeous ocean views. Begin at the popular Ribeira d’Ilhas beach, then head up the trail to the north. You’ll start with a steep but short climb, then find yourself on top of the bluffs, where you’ll stay for the rest of the trek.
Take your time as you hike, stopping for panoramic views. As you near the end of the trail, you have a good chance of seeing surfers taking some of Ericeira’s most difficult waves. You’ll end at Praia dos Coxos, a small beach where you can often enjoy smaller crowds.
This is a fantastic sunset spot as well—watch the sun slip beneath the horizon and color the Atlantic as you walk.
We are so grateful to for Ericeira’s nature. It provides us with space to unplug, slow down, and connect with beautiful places. You don’t want to miss out on these hikes during your visit—grab a pair of sturdy shoes and get exploring!
