The Transformative Power of Art

Art is one of our passions at O House. It forms the heart of many of our retreats, connects us with the local community, and allows us to tap into our creativity. In a world where time for yourself is hard to come by, engaging in art is more important than ever. After a year of hosting art retreats, here are some of our biggest takeaways on the power of art.

Fosters Community

This is a big one. Art can be an inspiring tool to bring people together. We’ve seen it happen time and time again. Participants arrive for their retreat. They’re nervous and a little quiet as they settle in. Introductions are made, but real connection and friendship can feel distant. However, halfway into the first workshop, participants are laughing together on the couch as they share stories and trade tips. The initial awkwardness is gone, and friendships bloom quickly.

There’s something about art—the way it lets your mind run wild, gets your hands moving, and inspires conversation. All of these things help spark genuine connection. One of our favorite things about our retreats is seeing how participants stay in touch, even months after they’ve returned home. Over just a few days, artists forge lifelong friendships through a shared passion for art.

Encourages Playfulness

As we grow older, work often replaces play. Finding ways to tap back into your creative and whimsical side is important. Art can be a great tool is doing so. There are no rules, so you can experiment, make mistakes without judgement, and enjoy the process. This license to play can free up new inspiration and passion that you might not have known that you had.

This is especially true when creating with others; laugher abounds, new ideas popcorn around the group, and everyone leaves feeling joyful.

Connects us with Nature

Art and nature go so well together, and we strive to immerse ourselves in both during our retreats. We love starting the trip with a nature walk along Ericeira’s rugged coastline. Not only does it acquaint guests with the location, but it also complements the artistic process. Getting your blood flowing, breathing the fresh air, and enjoying first-class views can help kickstart inspiration down the road. Some of our artists even lead workshops in the field, doing sketch-alongs on the coast or snapping photos that will be used as references later on. Plus, creating in nature can help eliminate distractions and put your mind at ease.

A Form of Self-Care

So much of modern life tells us to go, go, go. With work, family, new TV shows, the hottest social media trends, and more all competing for our time and energy, taking the time to slow down is an intentional and transformative act. Art is a great way to do this. It requires us to work with our hands, creating something that takes times and focus. By forcing us to slow down, art helps us reconnect with ourselves. It gives us space to take a break from life’s pressures. It helps your mind wander, and can even inspire meditative states. In this way, art can be a powerful form of self-care, helping you fill your cup throughout the whole creative process.

Art goes against the modern trend of convenience. By choosing the slower, more intentional path, we commit to the journey, not just the end result. Not only does this make the process more fun, but it also means that when you do reach your final product, there’s even more satisfaction and pride. You know the work and love that went into the piece, and that makes it all the more special.

Art has so much to give, and we can’t wait to continue to explore its many benefits. Want to embark on your own artistic journey in Portugal? We still have one more retreat in our 2026 season, and will have plenty to look forward to in 2027 as well. Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime: start creating!
